Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is close to signing a new three-year contract with Arsenal, according to former defender Nigel Winterburn.

The forward’s future has been unclear for the past few months with talk over a new contract rumbling on.

Aubameyang is entering the final year of his contract, and Arsenal have been desperate to tie him down to a new deal.

Winners and Losers: Premier League winners and losers is back…

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has remained confident that his attacker will remain at the club. This confidence appears to have paid off, with it now looking like Aubaneyang is edging closer to signing a new deal.

Gunners legend Nigel Winterburn told Stadium Astro, as cited by the Daily Star, that the new contract is all-but finalised:

“My understanding is the contract is done, it’s not signed, and that Aubameyang will be at Arsenal for the foreseeable future.”

“My understanding is that it’s a three-year plus contract. It seems to be taking a long, long time.

“It’s made me very nervous, he’s the one player that Arsenal cannot afford to lose, particularly with what Mikel Arteta is trying to achieve at the football club.”

Aubameyang got up and running for the new season straight away, as he scored as Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0 at the weekend.

Since joining from Borrusia Dortmund, the Gabon international has been prolific in front of goal.

From his 111 appearances in all competitions, Aubameyang has scored an impressive 72 times. He has been Arsenal’s top scorer for the past two seasons, notching 22 Premier League goals in back-to-back campaigns.

Aubameyang played a starring role in Arsenal’s 2019/20 FA Cup run. He captained the side and also scored braces to dispatch Man City in the semi-finals and Chelsea in the final to win his first trophy in English football.

The forward is now 31 years old, and this new contract will likely see him stay at the Gunners for the remainder of his career.
