Aubameyang to sign Arsenal deal ‘imminently’ due to two key men

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will sign a three-year deal ‘imminently’ as ‘Arsenal’s highest-paid player’.

David Ornstein and James McNicholas of The Athletic have confirmed that the striker is expected to commit himself to Arsenal until summer 2023, putting to an end any speculation over his future.

They say that the terms involved ‘will enable him to become Arsenal’s highest-paid player,’ although it is unclear if bonuses are included to take his earnings beyond Mesut Ozil’s basic £350,000-a-week wage.

Five players Arsenal must build around

Aubameyang had been linked with Inter Milan and Barcelona in recent months but has been convinced by ‘the sense of direction and progress’ under Mikel Arteta.

The report states that ‘the intervention’ of the Spaniard ‘proved crucial’ during negotiations, while Aubameyang’s own father ‘was fundamental to getting the deal over the line’.

Arsenal could now focus their attentions on Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey or Lyon schemer Houssem Aouar, who have both emerged as targets for the north London club.

Arteta has already signed Pablo Mari, Cedric Soares, Willian and Gabriel Magalhaes on permanent deals this summer, with Dani Ceballos rejoining on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

The breakthrough with Aubameyang will therefore be ‘a significant boost’ to the club, who ‘believe’ he ‘can defy the age curve’ to prosper at 31 and beyond.
