Carragher admits he is puzzled by ‘funny’ Liverpool player
Jamie Carragher wants “funny player” Naby Keita “to really explode” at Liverpool.
Keita played almost an hour for Liverpool against West Ham on Monday, being replaced by the game-changing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when the hosts were 2-1 down in the 57th minute.
Liverpool went on to win 3-2 without the Guinean midfielder, whose progress at Anfield has been stunted by competition and injuries.
Keita has not lost a single Premier League game since he arrived on Merseyside for £52.75m, but is yet to truly establish himself as a first-team regular.
OPINION: Liverpool needed the oomph of the Ox against West Ham
Carragher believes Keita’s statistics show “a top player”, but “I don’t feel like I see that with my eyes”.
“This is the man who I’m still waiting to really explode and show Liverpool supporters what he is about,” he told Sky Sports.
“He’s a funny player. You can watch a game – and the perfect example was away against Norwich and I didn’t think he played particularly well, he didn’t have a terrible game, he was just OK.
“Then you get all the stats come through about how many times he regained the ball, how many passes he made to people in the box, all these different stats that when you look at you think you’ve got a top player there.
“He’s always top of those stats but when I watch a game, I don’t feel like I see that with my eyes. He’s got to stay fit, that’s a big thing for him, but there is still a role in central midfield to add more of an attacking thrust to Liverpool.
“That’s what he was brought in for and that’s what we need to see a lot more of.”
