Chelsea boss Frank Lampard praised the character of his side after they breezed past Crystal Palace on Saturday.

After a quiet first half, the Blues burst into life in the second half against Roy Hodgson’s men.

New signing Ben Chilwell opened the scoring in the 50th minute before Kurt Zouma doubled their lead with a powerful header.

Chelsea was later awarded two penalties in just four minutes to secure their victory. Jorginho slotted both spot-kicks away in the 78th and 82nd minute to round off a positive day for Lampard’s side.

Lampard reserved particular praise for Chilwell in his comments after the game.

“At half time, we had a lot of control but our final third play was not enough movement or penetration but it was good in the second half and we got the win.

“Ben Chilwell was fantastic in all senses and it looks like he has played for us for a long time.”

After starting in their midweek cup loss to Tottenham, Callum Hudson-Odoi started again today. The attacker came off the bench against West Brom and changed the game.

He came on with the Blues 3-0 down at the break, but he scored to help his side earn a 3-3 draw.

Lampard was full of praise for Hudson-Odoi, who continues to be linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

He added: “I think Callum’s performance, particularly in the second half when he got more aggressive, he showed ability and pace. Callum is absolutely part of our plans here.”

“There is no definitive answer, we will know by Monday whether there is. Callum is our player, what Callum wants comes into consideration, it has to work for us.”

Jorginho scored two penalties today, so he has now scored three from the first four games of the season.

Before his second spot-kick against Crystal Palace, Tammy Abraham was seen in discussion with Jorginho about taking the penalty.

This was until Cesar Azpiliqueta came over to cool the situation to ensure Jorginho was the one who took it.

Lampard was asked about this incident after the game. He insisted that the issue had been sorted and there were “no problems”:

“It’s been dealt with. No problems. I want leaders – and a little bit of conflict. It’s good that Tammy was enthusiastic but you don’t jump ahead of the list.”
