Leeds United target Rodrigo De Paul has confirmed that Atletico Madrid have shown interest in signing him.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side had been chasing the Udinese midfielder for most of the transfer window. The Serie A side were only willing to accept offers of around £35m for De Paul.

The Argentinan was open about his interest at joining Leeds United on social media, but the two clubs could not agree on a deal for him.

EFL must beware PL bearing gifts, but what’s the alternative?

De Paul has spent the last four seasons in Italy with Udinese. In that time he has made 146 appearances in all competitions, scoring 25 goals for them in the process.

His form domestically was rewarded with his first call-up for Argentina’s senior squad. He made his debut in 2018, and since then he has been capped 17 times for La Albiceleste.

The 26-year-old made the move to Udinese from Valencia in 2016. He made 34 league appearances for the Spanish side between 2014 and 2016, before being loaned out by Gary Neville to Racing Club in Argentina.

Despite showing interest in a move to Leeds, De Paul now sounds desperate to return to La Liga. De Paul told Marca, as cited by HITC, that he would love to link up with Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone:

“I would like to return to Spain. La Liga is beautiful.

“I know there was an interest [from Atletico]. With a coach like Simeone, it draws my attention. I believe they play the dynamic football that I like.

“Every training session seems like an official match for them. In Argentina, we grew up with this attitude.

“It’s an extremely big club, a club who fight for important things and, if it happens one day, I would be happy to go there.”
