Liverpool fan says Tottenham showed ‘serious’ summer interest
Wout Weghorst has admitted that “it was serious with Tottenham” this summer.
Weghorst has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, often talking up his desire to join Liverpool, while attracting interest from Arsenal and Newcastle.
But the Wolfsburg striker has suggested that Tottenham also approached him over a deal this past transfer window, before bringing Carlos Vinicius in on loan from Benfica.
“I can be honest. Of course, I knew that there was interest left and right,” he told Kicker.
“It was serious with Tottenham. I was a candidate. Of course, you are interested in something like that too. It is also a confirmation that I’m on the right track.
“I’m 28 now, and I’d like to win titles. I made that clear here. I hope that we improve as a team so that we can possibly do more overall.
“If, one day, I have the feeling that I cannot achieve my goals at VfL, then I will say so. That is currently not the case. The Premier League is still a dream of mine.”
Tottenham not only brought in Vinicius to provide competition and cover for Harry Kane, but oversaw the north London return of Gareth Bale to boost their attacking options.
We are rather excited to see him again.
Weghorst, meanwhile, has reprised his role as a Wolfsburg regular in their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season, with three successive draws keeping them a place above the relegation zone.
The 28-year-old Netherlands international once referred to playing for “very special” Liverpool as his career dream.
“If I continue to train with full commitment, I think that opportunity will come,” he said in 2018.
“Of course, something like that depends on several factors. You have to stay fit and a coach and club must see it in you, but apart from that you can create many things in life for yourself.”
