MSU to Travel to SMSU on Saturday

MARSHALL, Minn. – Minnesota State wrestling is set to tangle with Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m.

Minnesota State is on a six game losing streak with a 2-6 overall record and 2-2 record in NSIC competition. SMSU comes in with a 9-4 record and a 3-1 record in conference action but dropped its last dual to #7 Upper Iowa, 27-9.

Two Mavericks have impressive winning streaks to take with them to Marshall including Alphonso Vruno (So., 141 lbs.) and Adam Cooling (Fr., 157 lbs.). Vruno’s streak is up to four wins with a major win over Jacob Anderson (Augustana) Saturday. The major win has propelled him to eighth place in the latest NWCA National Rankings. Cooling has not cracked the top eight yet for the 157 lbs. weight class but has a five-match winning streak to his name.

MSU also has members ranked in the super region three rankings. Vruno is ranked fourth while Cooling collected a seventh-place ranking. Darick Vancura (Fr., 174 lbs.) was awarded a fourth spot as well. The Mavericks earned 14 total points to be ranked 10th overall.

After their dual with the Mustangs, the Mavericks will travel to #7 Upper Iowa on Feb 7. The dual with the Peacocks is slated for 7 p.m.
