Newcastle United, West Ham to miss out on former Man Utd defender
Newcastle United and West Ham United are both set to miss out on Lyon defender Rafael da Silva, according to reports in France.
The full-back – along with twin brother Fabio – joined Manchester United in 2008 from Brazillian side Fluminense. Rafael went onto enjoy seven years playing at Old Trafford, making 169 appearances in all competitions.
The 30-year-old only made ten Premier League appearances in his final season for Man Utd, however. In August 2015 he completed his move to Ligue 1 side Lyon, where he put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal.

Rafael has spent the last five seasons with Lyon. He has made 139 appearances in all competitions in that time, though he has fallen down the pecking order of late.
During the 2019/20 campaign, he made only 13 league appearances, with four of them being off the bench. Now Lyon are willing to let their man leave this summer, which alerted both Newcastle and West Ham.
But according to French outlet L’Equipe Rafael is set to play his football in Turkey next season.
The report adds that Istanbul Basaksehir are the ones most likely to sign the defender, as he personally laughed off a move to Besiktas:
Newcastle have had a busy few days on the transfer front. On Monday they confirmed the £20 million signing of Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson.

They are also very close to signing former Cherries winger Ryan Fraser and Norwich left-back Jamal Lewis.
Earlier in the window, Newcastle also signed midfielder Jeff Hendrick and goalkeeper Mark Gillespie from Burnley and Motherwell respectively.
West Ham meanwhile have only made one signing so far this summer. Tomas Soucek spent last season on loan with the Hammers, and he has now joined permanently for a fee of around £14m.
