SCSU Wrestling Ranked 5th in Latest Division II National Poll
EDMOND, Okla. — The St. Cloud State University wrestling (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) maintained its number five ranking in the latest NCAA Division II wrestling poll that was released on Jan. 3 by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.
Notre Dame (Ohio) maintained its hold on the top spot in the NCAA Division II wrestling poll with 158 points in balloting of head coaches from around the country to keep the No. 1 spot it earned in the pre-season rankings and the first regular season poll. Two-time defending national champion Nebraska-Kearney came in second with 150 points, while Central Oklahoma is third with 146 points. Newberry (S.C.) stayed fourth and St. Cloud State (Minn.) fifth, with Adams State (Colo.), Kutztown (Pa.), Indianapolis (Ind.), Western State (Colo.) and Upper Iowa rounding out the top 10.
Ten of the top-20 teams will compete in the 16-team NWCA Division II National Duals Jan. 11-12 in Des Moines, Iowa, including seven top-10 squads — St. Cloud State, Notre Dame, Central Oklahoma, Newberry Kutztown, Indianapolis and Upper Iowa.
Individually, SCSU’s Andy Pokorny was ranked second in the 133-pound division in the latest Division II poll, while teammate Matt Nelson earned a second place poll position at 141-pounds. The Huskies’ Clint Poster claimed the number four spot in the polls at 157-pounds and SCSU’s Gabe Fogarty was ranked fourth in the polls at 165-pounds.
SCSU will compete this weekend at the Mid-Atlatnic Duals in Ashland, Ohio. Fans can listen to the matches live from Ohio on the KVSC sports stream with John Peterson on the call.
