Vikings’ North and Docken receive draws for NCAA DII National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced brackets for the Division II Wrestling Championships that will be held in St. Louis, Mo. March 13-14. Augustana’s TJ North, Jayd Docken and Michael Lowman qualified for the national championships with their performances at the NCAA Super Region III Championships last weekend.

North (23-3) will take on Findlay’s Schuyler Phillips, Docken (27-4) will square-off with East Stroudsburg’s Tyler Richardson (18-8) and Lowman (29-11) will take on second-ranked Garret Grey (32-3) of Tiffin.

North, the defending NCAA runner-up at 125 pounds, defended his individual region championship last weekend going 3-0 at the Super Region III Championships. North opened the weekend with a bye before winning three straight decisions, including a 3-1 sudden victory over Upper Iowa’s Da’Wayne Roberson who is ranked sixth in the country. North earned All-America honors last season and will participate in the national championships for the second straight season.

Docken, a native of Winner, S.D., will make his fourth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships after a third-place finish at the Super Region III Championships last weekend. Docken opened the weekend with a12-3 major decision over MSU Moorhead’s Christophe Bascon before defeating Northern State’s Joe Gomes in a 4-1 decision. Docken, ranked fifth nationally at 197 pounds, lost a close match-up against second-ranked Julian Smith of McKendree losing in a 3-2 decision. He then pinned Upper Iowa’s Dylan Windfield and won a 3-2 decision over Northern State’s Joe Gomes to place third.

Lowman will make his first appearance at the NCAA Championships after placing fourth at the region championships. Lowman, a 285-pounder from North Highlands, Calif., opened competition with a 6-0 decision over Maryville’s Morgan Denson before losing a 10-5 decision to SMSU’s Cole Wilson. He then reeled off three straight wins before losing in the third-place match in a 3-2 decision to Upper Iowa’s Logan Hopp.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference qualified 16 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships.
