Wolves set their sights on title-winner Gerrard

Wolverhampton Wanderers are considering Steven Gerrard as a potential successor to Nuno Espirito Santo, according to reports.

Bruno Lage emerged as an early favourite for the job but there are doubts over whether he will be able to secure a work permit, with Wolves set to attend a hearing on Wednesday.

This has forced the club to reassess their options, and according to The Athletic, Gerrard is on the shortlist.

The Liverpool legend guided Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title since 2011 this season, going unbeaten in the process. His side amassed 102 points and made it to the round of 16 of the Europa League.

Frank Lampard – another young, English manager – is also on Wolves’ radar, with the club eager to fill the role vacated by Nuno as soon as possible.

Having finished 13th this season,  a rebuild will be necessary in the summer, and a forward-thinking manager with a clear philosophy is thought to be a priority.

The board grew tired of Nuno’s reactive approach to matches, despite the success it brought. When he encouraged his side to play on the front foot and switched to a four-man defence earlier this season, it felt as though Wolves had sacrificed their defensive solidity, and results dipped.

With Nuno seeking pastures new and the club looking to refresh a tired side, the decision was taken to end his four-year relationship with the club.

Executive chairman Jeff Shi said: “Nuno has brought us some incredibly special moments at Wolves that will never be forgotten, but every chapter comes to an end.

“His loyalty and dedication over the last four years has been immeasurable, and we cannot thank him enough for the progress he has made for Wolves.”

Nuno, who has since been linked with Lazio and Crystal Palace, said: “Since the first day we arrived at Compton, our ambition was to make a positive change and push this football club forward, and I am proud to say that we did that every single day.

“We achieved our goals, we did it with passion and we did it together.”
